What size storage unit do I need?

A plain guide to storage unit sizes in square feet, from lockers to 40ft containers, and what each size holds.

Most people overestimate how much space they need. Here's a rough guide, assuming things are boxed and stacked sensibly.

SizeRoughly holds
10–25 sq ftBoxes, a bike, the contents of a small room or a student's belongings
35–50 sq ftA one-bedroom flat, or a trade's tools and materials
70 sq ft (10ft container)A one- to two-bedroom flat
100 sq ftA two-bedroom house
150 sq ft (20ft container)A three-bedroom house, or a small car
200 sq ftA four-bedroom house
300 sq ft (40ft container)A large house, business stock on racking, vehicles or plant

Height counts

Indoor rooms are often 2.4 m or more high, containers about 2.39 m. Stacking boxes to the ceiling halves the floor space you need.

Leave a path

If you'll need things out during the let, leave a walkway. It costs about 20% more space and saves a lot of unloading.

Work it out item by item with the storage size calculator.
